Pelvis Pain - Evalution and Treatment

Chronic female pelvic pain is classified as pain below the navel lasting longer than 6 months. Pelvic pain can result from several different causes, many of which can be successfully treated.

Although the cause of pelvic pain cannot always be determined, some common origins include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Scar tissue after surgery or infection
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Bladder problems
  • Ovarian cysts

Patients who suffer from pelvic pain need a complete evaluation including blood and urine tests, screening for STI's and imaging such as a sonogram or CT Scan. Sometimes diagnostic surgery (Laparoscopy) may be used for evaluation if a cause cannot be found by other tests.
Treatment for pelvic pain depends on the cause, but can include:

  • Birth control pills or hormone treatment to control cyclic pain
  • Lupron therapy for severe Endometriosis
  • Surgery to remove a cyst or mass
  • Antibiotics
  • Pain relievers
  • Cognitive therapy

Pelvic pain can be a debilitating condition that can affect your everyday quality of life. It is important to work with your doctor to diagnose the cause of pain in order to receive effective treatment.
