Uterine Fibroids - Evaluation and Treatment

They can affect women of any age, but are more common in woman during their 30s and 40s. Many women have no symptoms while some can experience debilitating problems.

Fibroids, also known as myomas, are benign tumors that may occur in various areas of the uterus.
Women who do have symptoms may experience:

  • Heavy bleeding during or between periods
  • Feeling of fullness and pressure in pelvis
  • Enlargement of abdomen
  • Recurrent miscarriage or pregnancy loss
  • Pain during sexual relations
  • Frequent urination

It is important to evaluate for the presence of fibroids in all women. Treatment may include medication to relieve symptoms, hormonal therapy or possibly surgery for more severe cases.

Surgeries can include a myomectomy to remove the fibroids or a hysterectomy to remove the uterus.
Newer treatment options such as uterine artery embolization or UAE (performed by an Interventional Radiologist to shrink fibroids) are also available to help control symptoms.

Every woman who has fibroids may have different symptoms and benefit from different forms of treatment. Our goal is to individualize the best treatment for you.
